The CREATE Foundation of Northeast Mississippi is Mississippi's oldest and largest community foundation, with more than 1,000 endowments and $166 million in assets.
It was founded in 1982 by radiologist George McLean, who died in 1983, and his wife, Anna Keirsey.
"He was really a visionary and a great man," Dan Brasfield, the foundation's sole stockholder, tells the Starkville Daily Journal.
"To take a newspaper and use it to grow a community, then use it to build a foundation whose impact is growing more every year, even well after he's gone, is just amazing."
Brasfield and his wife, Frances, have given steadily over the years to many charities, including Baptist Children's Hospital, the Palmer Home for Children, and St.
Jude Children's Hospital.
"He was never really able to volunteer because he worked so many hours as a radiologist," Frances Brasfield says.
"I did as much volunteer work as I could, but donating was really the only way we could contribute as much as we wanted to, so we've always done that."
